Straight Shafts

A straight shaft paddle is the most commonly used in kayaking and have been around for hundreds of years. Straight shafts allow paddlers the ability to easily slide hands off-centre to vary leverage, thus increasing power and control during inclement conditions. The straight design increases versatility, range of motion, and can be used for all paddling disciplines without any great disadvantages. However, they do apply more force to arms and wrists.

Generally, fibreglass is the main straight shaft construction material and is widely utilized in combination with advanced reinforcement materials such as carbon and aramid fibre. Full carbon shafts are used in the industry, but a composite shaft will always offer more advantages. Straight composite shafts are lighter, offer better flexibility and impact absorption over cranked.

Crank Shafts

Proven at the highest levels in whitewater competition, from Olympic Slalom, World Freestyle Championships or long distance Touring Expeditions, crank shafts utilize a corrective grip angle to help paddlers push the limits of the sport. They give more indication of blade orientation making it easier to position the paddle properly in forward propulsion. Cranks are made to allow the wrist to maintain a more natural alignment. This minimises the destructive compressive forces that create potential wrist injuries and maximise strokes for optimal proficiency. Cranks are a necessity for those who find discomfort using straight shafts, or paddle for long periods.

Our Neutral Torque cranks prevent the inward bend of the wrists allowing a fuller grip, which does not over strain tendons and joints. The design allow all four fingers to stay in contact with the shaft while the wrist maintains that natural position. Having more contact with the shaft increases your control without the need to grip the shaft too tight. A loser grip reduces fatigue, which in turn also helps to avoid any involuntary blade flutter.

The Axis of our Neutral Crank remains the same from end to end, keeping the blades in line with your hands, just like a straight shaft. Our cranks have long oval grips which are extremely comfortable in the hands, and very easy to use. The crank sections do not restrict grip, and are perfect for shaft length adjustment. Please be aware, once used you will not want to go back to using a straight shaft.
